Criteria

Courses meeting one of the following criteria are eligible for scheduling in a course-specific exam block

  • Courses with multiple sections & combined total enrollment greater than 395; or
  • Multiple sections of a course taught by one instructor with combined total enrollment greater than 395; or
  • Courses with a large number of sections offering a common exam, with enrollment totals at a minimum of 350

Request Process

New requests must be submitted via the Class Exception Request Form, available by logging into Answers.

Once approved by your chair and dean, and in working with the Office of the Registrar, the best block to absorb the request will be determined. Requests to remove a course or section from the common exam block should be made using the same form.

Requirements

Courses approved for course-specific exam blocks must comply with the following requirements.

  1. Final exams in courses assigned to a course-specific exam block must be given during the assigned day and time.  Instructors do not have the option of giving the final examination at the period associated with the meeting pattern of their class in any given semester.
  2. Instructors must make provision for make-up examinations for students with the conflict of another exam scheduled during the same course-specific exam block.  Students are allowed to decide which examination they will take at the scheduled time.  The room reservation for the make-up exam must be arranged with their department office and announced by the instructor to students no later than mid semester.  Typically, make-up exams are given in the exam period immediately following the final exam; however they may be given at another time that is agreeable to both the students and instructor.

Policy effective as of 4/12/2010.
